Kedarnath is a popular pilgrimage destination known for housing the Kedarnath Temple. To reach the temple you have to undertake a 16 kilometer long trek from Gaurikund. Kedarnath Trekking Distance
The distance of the trek to Kedarnath will depend on the route you undertake. The traditional trekking route begins from Gaurikund. It is a 16 km long trek that takes you through some of the most beautiful sceneries including cascading waterfalls, snow-capped mountains and lush green valleys. The trek takes between six to eight hours depending on the weather and your fitness level.
Gaurikund to Kedarnath Trek Time
Day One – Gaurikund to Kedarnath: On the first day, you will have to typically cover around seven to eight kilometer from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. It will take around 6-7 hours to cover this distance. Along this picturesque trek, you’ll pass through some of the most breathtaking locations such as Bheembali, Rambara, Jangal Chatti, Chhani Camp, and Lincholi, which are famous camping sites. Along the way you’ll also find a hot water spring where you can rejuvenate yourself.
Day Two –Return and Exploration: On the second day you’ll visit the Kedarnath Temple and explore the breathtaking surroundings. You’ll then return back to Gaurikund. The duration of the return trip is around 9 km and it can be completed in about 5-6 hours.
Kedarnath Hike: Non-stop
If you have a good fitness level and are very adventurous, you can complete the Kedarnath trek in one day. 90% trekkers opt to spend the night at Kedarnath Temple due to harsh weather and challenging terrains. Going uphill to the temple usually takes around 6-7 hours for those who have trekking experience and an adventurous spirit. Returning downhill usually takes around 5 hours for the same distance (downward direction). You should plan the trekking expedition depending on your physical fitness and experience.
Trekking Path
Gaurikund to Jungle Chatti (4 km)
- Gaurikund is considered to be the starting point of the Kedarnath Trek. From Gaurikund you’ll have to walk to Jungle Chatti covering a distance of around 4 kilometer. If you don’t want to walk you can take a palanquin or pony. After reaching Jungle Chatti you can rest for some time.
Jungle Chatti to Bheem Bali (3 km)
- You will now continue trekking to Bheem Bali covering a distance of around 3 kilometers take. At Bheem Bali you’ll find toilets, Wi-Fi, tents and free drinking water for a hassle-free journey.
Bhim Bali to Linchauli (4 km)
- The journey to Lincholi from Bhimbali is approximately 4 kilometers long. On the way you will relish surreal mountain views and the starting point of the Mandakini RIver. Both accommodation and medical services, like GMVN and private tents, are available here.
Linchauli to Base Camp of Kedarnath (4 km)
- Your trek will end with a walk of around 4-kilometer to Kedarnath Base Camp. On the way you will see some of the most stunning sceneries and stunning glaciers that make the trek more unforgettable.
Kedarnath Base Camp to Kedarnath Shrine (1 km)
- The final 1 km trek to Kedarnath temple from the base camp is easy to walk and you’ll find many facilities. At the base camp you will also find GMVN camps, which you can book on their official website in advance.

Helicopter Service from Phata
Helicopter services are available from Phata for those who do not want to undertake the long trek. Phata is located at a distance of around 15.3 kilometers from Gaurikund. You can opt for a helicopter ride to Kedarnath from Phata in around 5 to 7 minutes. This option is ideal for those who have limited time or cannot walk long distances.
Trekking Tips
- Use trekking poles, helmets for your complete safety during the trek.
- You can hire a pony service or palanquin from Gaurikund to kedarnath. You can avail of the service by paying to the porters a fixed rate directly which will cut down the cost incurred on your walking journey. If you opt for alternative travel options from other than the government approved ones you will have to ensure they are registered with a government number.
- The Kedarnath temple is located at a height of around 11,000-12,000 feet above sea level. Those suffering from heart diseases or respiratory problems should not undertake the journey to Kedarnath due to low oxygen levels in the air. Before embarking on the journey you should make yourself fit by practicing pranayama, yoga, breathing exercises or other forms of physical activity. This will help you in preparing yourself for these challenging conditions.
- Per pony only 10 kgs of travel luggage is allowed and only 5 kgs of luggage is allowed in the same way in Kedarnath helicopter services. This has been done to make the journey an enjoyable experience for you and regulate the weight distribution.
- At all costs you should avoid wearing sarees and short clothes such as mini skirtand crop top as it will lead to some kind of difficulty to your holy journey. You can wear salwar kameez or kurta pyjama along with a good pair of spots shoes and sneakers which will make walking very comfortable allowing you to cover larger distances.
