How to Reach
By Flight
Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport to Kedarnath Temple. It is located on the outskirts of Dehradun. You can plan your yatra by booking the flight ticket from Delhi to Dehradun. When you land by flight in Dehradun, then you can opt for taxis and rental cars that run from Dehradun to Sonprayag or Guptkashi.
By Train
Rishikesh and Haridwar Railway Stations are the nearest railway stations to Kedarnath Temple. By train you can come to Haridwar and then head to the temple.
By Road
You can plan your Kedarnath Dham yatra by road via Rishikesh and Haridwar. In that region, the most popular transportatio n mode is rental cars to reach Kedarnath.

Best Time to Visit Kedarnath
May and October are the best time to visit Kedarnath. During this time of the year, the weather is very comfortable, and for pilgrims the temple is open. From November to April the temple remains closed due to heavy snowfall.
- Monsoon (July to August): During this time of the year, Kedarnath experiences landslides and heavy rainfall. Travel can be a bit risky during this time, but it’s not so crowded.
- Summer (May to June): The average temperature ranges between 10°C to 20°C, making it ideal for darshan, trekking and sightseeing.
- Post-Monsoon (September to October): These months are ideal for darshan, with clear skies and moderate temperatures.
Closing and Opening Date of Kedarnath Temple
- Due to Kedarnath Dham’s unbearable cold climate, the Kedarnath Yatra remains open from May to October for 6 months.
- The Hindu Month Vaishakh of the Akshaya Tritiya Tithi is the day when the temple opens every year.
- Similarly, the doors of Kedarnath temple close during the Deepawali in the Hindu Calendar’s Kartik month.
Trekking Route
The trek to Kedarnath from Gaurikund is a steep 16 km climb. On the way, you’ll find several resting points and refreshment stalls. For those who’re unable to trek can opt for helicopter services, ponies and palkis.
- Gaurikund to Bhimbali: 6 Kilometers
- Bhimbali to Lincholi: 4 Kilometers
- Lincholi to Base Camp of Kedarnath: 4 Kilometers
- Base Camp of Kedarnath to Kedarnath Temple: 1 Kilometers
Travel Tips
- Before you begin the trek, you should try to acclimate yourself to the high altitude at Gaurikund.
- Inside the temple, photography is not allowed because of religious reasons. You should abide by all the rules that have been set up by temple authorities.
- Try visiting the temple during the weekdays as there is significantly less crowd.
- After mid-October the temperature during the night drops into minus, so you’re advised to carry enough woolen clothes. Avoid visiting Kedarnath around Diwali, as its very crowded during this time. You can visit the temple ten to fifteen days before Diwali.
- Sonprayag is considered to be the last stop. Other state vehicles are only allowed till this stop. After that, you’ll have to take a local taxi to reach Gauri Kund. From Gauri Kund, you will have to either take Pony or trek.
- If you’re traveling in monsoons, you should check with tour operators, local authorities or tour guides or about the road conditions and weather before you start your journey.
- If you’re traveling by car, you should leave from Rishikesh, Tehri or Haridwar early in the morning.
- Before starting the trek avoid heavy meals; instead, opt for energy-boosting, light snacks to keep yourself energized throughout the tour.
- You can also hire porters and mules; Before hiring you should check the official price chart.
- For cost-effectiveness and convenience, you’re advised to book your palki or pony at the Gaurikund counter, which guarantees reliable service and fair pricing.
- Carry all the important medications, especially for pre-existing conditions or altitude sickness.

Clothing
- Lowers/Cotton Joggers: Carry cotton joggers/lowers as especially in cold weather they are more comfortable than polyester ones.
- Polyester Joggers/lowers: They dry quickly and feel very comfortable while travelling. They are also easy to carry and lightweight.
- Winter Jackets: If you’re travelling in summer you should not forget to carry winter jacket. Elderly people should carry even more clothing.
- Traditional attire: While visiting the temple you should wear traditional attires and put a paste made of vermillion and sandalwood on your forehead with various designs.
