Gangotri Yamunotri Yatra Package from Delhi 6 Days / 5 Nights

Group & FIT Tour

Uttarakhand, India

There's something about the Himalayan pilgrimage routes that no description fully captures. You drive hours through pine-covered mountains, cross rivers swollen with glacial melt, trek uphill with strangers who feel like family — and then, finally, you stand before a temple carved into the rock, bells ringing, incense floating in cold mountain air. That feeling? That's the Gangotri Yamunotri Yatra from Delhi.

These are two of the four sacred sites of the Chota Chardham Yatra in Uttarakhand. Yamunotri — the origin of the Yamuna River — comes first. Then Gangotri, the place where the Ganga is said to have descended to earth. Together, they form a Do Dham Yatra journey of immense spiritual weight and extraordinary natural beauty.

Whether you're planning a budget Gangotri Yamunotri package from Delhi or a premium private cab tour, this complete guide covers the 6-day Do Dham Yatra itinerary, day-by-day route, trekking tips, cost breakdown, best time to visit, and everything in between.

The full route covers roughly 1,200+ km by road from Delhi and back, with a 6 km moderate trek to Yamunotri from Janki Chatti. Gangotri Temple is fully road-accessible — the tarmac goes right to the temple door, making it ideal even for senior citizens and families.

Tip: Yatra registration is FREE and MANDATORY in 2026. Register online at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in before you depart. Aadhaar card is the required ID. Checkpoints at Hina/Maneri (Gangotri) and Barkot (Yamunotri) will verify your pass.

Option 1: May–June (Peak Season)

Temples freshly open; maximum pilgrim energy and festive atmosphere
Temperatures: 10°C–20°C during day; can drop to 2°C–5°C at night
Crowds are high — book hotels at least 4–6 weeks in advance
Weather is mostly clear; occasional light showers in June

Option 2: September–October (Ideal Season)

Post-monsoon clarity — trails clean, skies blue, rivers full
Less crowded than May–June; easier to get hotel rooms
Cooler temperatures but very pleasant for trekking
Temples close in November — visit by October end

Season to Avoid: July–August (Monsoon)

Heavy rains, landslides, and blocked roads — travel not recommended
Many stretches near Uttarkashi and Barkot become risky

November to April: Both temples closed due to heavy snowfall

  • Register early: Online Yatra registration opens weeks before the temple opening date. Don't wait — slots fill fast for peak dates.
  • Carry cash: ATMs only work reliably up to Uttarkashi. Beyond that, it's cash-only territory.
  • Pack warm layers: Even in May, Gangotri nights drop to 2–5°C. A windproof jacket, thermals, and woolly socks are non-negotiable.
  • Trekking shoes: Waterproof shoes with good grip for Yamunotri trek. Avoid open sandals or new shoes.
  • Altitude adjustment: Gangotri (3,048m) and Yamunotri (3,293m) can cause mild altitude sickness. Move slowly, hydrate constantly, don't rush.
  • Medical kit: Carry Diamox (altitude), Combiflam (pain), Avomine (nausea), Crocin (fever), and a crepe bandage at minimum.
  • Start trek early: Begin the Yamunotri trek by 7 AM. Return to base before 2 PM. Afternoon conditions deteriorate.
  • Vegetarian only: All route stops follow strict vegetarian food culture. Non-veg items are unavailable throughout the Yatra circuit.
  • Respect the 2026 rule: Touching idols, bells, and religious books inside temple courtyards is strictly prohibited in 2026.

Day 01 Delhi to Haridwar — The Journey Begins

Departure from Delhi | ~214 km | 6–7 Hours

Your Yatra starts the moment you leave Delhi behind. Most groups depart by 5:00–6:00 AM to reach Haridwar by afternoon. The route takes you via NH-58 or NH-334 — both are well-maintained highways through Uttar Pradesh and into Uttarakhand.

The transition from the flat Indo-Gangetic plains to the foothills of the Himalayas is almost meditative. The air gets cleaner. The traffic thins. The mountains begin to appear on the horizon.

Evening in Haridwar — Har Ki Pauri Ganga Aarti

Check into your hotel, freshen up, and head straight to Har Ki Pauri for the evening Ganga Aarti. This is one of the most spiritually charged rituals in India. Hundreds of oil lamps float on the river as priests perform synchronized aarti to the sound of bells and conch shells.

If time permits, visit the Mansa Devi Temple by ropeway (₹96 return, approximately). The view of the Ganges from the hilltop at dusk is worth every minute.

  • Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri — free to attend (₹15–₹20 for flower offering)
  • Mansa Devi Temple ropeway — approximately ₹96 return (optional)
  • Walk through the markets for local snacks and religious items
  • Local dhaba dinner — try the aloo puri, kadhi, or thali (₹80–₹150)

Overnight stay in Haridwar. Hotels range from ₹500 (budget guesthouses near Har Ki Pauri) to ₹3,000+ (mid-range river-view hotels).

Haridwar → Rishikesh → Barkot | ~235 km | 7–8 Hours

Leave after an early breakfast. The road today is one of the most scenic of the entire trip. You'll pass through Rishikesh — feel free to stop for a quick visit to Laxman Jhula and the ghats — then continue north through Tehri and Chamba.

En route, the coach usually halts at Kempty Falls near Mussoorie — a beautiful, multi-tiered waterfall that gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs and soak their feet in the cool mountain water.

  • Rishikesh stop — Laxman Jhula, Ram Jhula, Triveni Ghat (30–45 mins); yoga capital of the world
  • Kempty Falls — entry approximately ₹30–₹50; scenic waterfall near Mussoorie, photography friendly
  • Lunch at a roadside dhaba in Chamba or Tehri — wholesome vegetarian Garhwali meals (~₹100–150)
  • Barkot — arrival by early evening at 1,220 m altitude; check in, rest, acclimatise

Barkot sits at about 1,220 metres elevation. The air here is noticeably cleaner and cooler. Take an early dinner and rest well — tomorrow is the most physically demanding day of the trip.

Tip: Barkot is your last easy stop before the Yamunotri trek. Charge all devices, withdraw cash (ATMs get unreliable further ahead), and lay out your trekking clothes for tomorrow morning.

Overnight in Barkot. Budget guesthouses: ₹600–900. Mid-range hotels: ₹1,200–1,800 per night.

Janki Chatti Base | 6 km Trek | Altitude 3,293 m

This is the day you've been preparing for. Wake up early — ideally by 5:30 AM — have a light breakfast, and drive to Janki Chatti (about 42 km from Barkot). Janki Chatti is the trek starting point.

The 6 km uphill trek to Yamunotri takes about 2–4 hours depending on your pace. The trail winds through dense forest, along the rushing Yamuna River, past small dhabas selling chai and Maggi. Moderate difficulty — but the altitude will slow you down if you push too hard.

At Yamunotri Temple

The Yamunotri Temple was originally built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century and has been rebuilt several times since. It sits directly on the banks of the Yamuna's origin. The Divya Shila rock pillar just outside the temple is worshipped before entry.

Don't miss the Surya Kund — a natural thermal spring where the water boils at the surface. Pilgrims wrap rice and potatoes in cloth and cook them here as a living offering. The cooked food is taken home as sacred prasad. It's one of the most unique religious traditions you'll see anywhere in India.

  • Temple darshan — free; donations welcome
  • Holy dip in the warm bath kund — purifying and surprisingly comforting in the cold
  • Cook rice/potatoes in Surya Kund as prasad (bring cloth pouches)
  • Pony/Palki from Janki Chatti — approximately ₹600–900 per person each way (for those who can't trek)

Tip: Start the trek by 7:00 AM to return before 2:00 PM. Afternoon mist and cold descend quickly. The trail is clearly marked, but hiring a local guide (₹300–500) adds context and safety.

Return trek to Janki Chatti, then drive back to Barkot. Overnight stay in Barkot.

Barkot → Uttarkashi | ~82 km | 2–3 Hours

A relatively short drive today — good news after yesterday's exertion. You'll arrive in Uttarkashi by late morning. This is your base for the Gangotri visit.

Uttarkashi sits on the banks of the Bhagirathi River and is considered a holy town in its own right. The name literally means 'Kashi (Varanasi) of the North,' and the town lives up to it — temples, ashrams, and spiritual energy everywhere.

Exploring Uttarkashi

Spend the afternoon visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva — notable for its ancient trident (Trishul) and architectural simplicity. Also worth seeing is the Shakti Temple and the local market where you can buy woollen shawls, local honey, and devotional items.

  • Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Uttarkashi — free darshan; open all day; known for its ancient Trishul (trident)
  • Shakti Temple — adjacent to Vishwanath; revered by locals; dedicated to Mata Shakti
  • Uttarkashi local market — stock up on dry fruits, woollen shawls, and warm clothing before Gangotri
  • ATM: Last reliable ATM before Gangotri Dham — withdraw sufficient cash today

In the evening, take a walk along the riverbank. The Bhagirathi here moves with force — a preview of the kind of raw Himalayan power you'll see at Gangotri tomorrow.

Overnight in Uttarkashi. Hotels range from ₹700 (basic) to ₹2,500 (comfortable mid-range with hot water).

Uttarkashi → Gangotri | ~100 km | 3–4 Hours One Way

Start early — depart by 6:00 AM with a packed breakfast. The road to Gangotri is arguably the most spectacular of the entire journey. You'll drive alongside the Bhagirathi River the whole way, through gorges, past waterfalls, through the magnificent Harsil Valley — a hidden gem that most tourists miss.

Gangnani Hot Spring — En Route

Stop at Gangnani — a natural hot water spring about 40 km before Gangotri. Take a holy dip here. The water is warm and believed to have therapeutic properties. A perfect moment of pause before the main Darshan.

At Gangotri Temple

Gangotri sits at 3,048 metres — no trekking needed; the road goes right to the temple. The Gangotri Temple was built in the 18th century by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa and is dedicated to Goddess Ganga.

As per Hindu mythology, this is the spot where the River Ganga descended from the heavens onto the matted locks of Lord Shiva, before flowing to the earth. The original source of the Ganga — Gaumukh Glacier — is 19 km further ahead (optional trek for adventure seekers).

  • Gangotri Temple darshan — free; usually less crowded in early morning; prioritise before 11 AM
  • River bank — take a holy dip in Bhagirathi (very cold; even in June it's near 8°C)
  • Submerged Shivling — visible from the ghats near the temple; a rare natural rock formation
  • Harsil Valley — stop on the return; apple orchards, dense deodar forests, stunning Himalayan views
  • Optional: Gaumukh Glacier Trek (19 km one way; requires separate GMVN permit; source of River Ganga)

Tip: The Gangotri Temple closes between 12 PM and 2 PM daily. Plan your Darshan for 8–11 AM or 2–5 PM. Start your return to Uttarkashi by 3:00 PM to ensure you reach before dark. Mountain roads after dusk are not recommended.

Return drive to Uttarkashi. Final night in the mountains — enjoy a quiet dinner by the river.

Uttarkashi → Rishikesh → Haridwar → Delhi | ~370 km | 8–9 Hours

The last day is a long drive back to Delhi. Leave early — by 6:00 AM ideally. The road descends beautifully back through the Himalayas.

Stop in Rishikesh for a final blessing at Triveni Ghat and a quiet walk across Laxman Jhula. If you have time, stop at Haridwar once more for one last glimpse of Har Ki Pauri — the same place where this Yatra truly began in your heart.

  • Triveni Ghat, Rishikesh — sacred bathing ghat; peaceful in the morning
  • Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula — the iconic suspension bridges
  • Haridwar market — last chance to buy Gangajal (Ganga water), prasad, and souvenirs
  • Reach Delhi by evening; drop at railway station or airport as required

You've visited two of the most sacred sites in the Hindu world. You've stood where two holy rivers begin. You've trekked Himalayan trails, breathed glacial air, and offered prayers in temples that have stood for centuries. That's not just a trip. That's something else entirely.
